Georgian Furniture Style
Furniture Fit For A King
Georgian furniture was influenced by the preferences of the three King George's of England and is larger in size with flat and plain areas. It denotes a strong and heavy feeling in a clean mass of space, highlighted with vertical reeds and flutes to soften and enhance the look. Quite often, the simple turning of timber and slight tapering with minimal fine detail is used on legs, for effect. Claw and ball feet are often utilised to finish off the piece.
Georgian pieces are highlighted with a scroll or capping, as well as very fine, heavily detailing using saw cuts or lots of fine carvings. These simple but repetitive patterns are added to build detail around the edges, bulking the appearance of the piece, to create heavy grandeur.
A Georgian room has a heavy, bold, grand look. Quite often, tapered pillars feature and can be used as entrance to a room in the doorways - A statuesque statement! A clean, open feeling exists throughout, but is punctuated by large statement pieces. These pieces, while bold and having presence are graceful in their own way.
There are always fine highlights around edging to emphasize a class difference and a preference for bolder furniture, rather than the intricate fine detail enfolding the furniture favoured by the French Parisian artisans.
